Mining vs Buying Bitcoin: Different Costs and Responsibilities

On By Kevin Tassé

Buying bitcoin and operating hardware are different activities

A bitcoin purchase involves acquisition costs, custody and exposure to a changing market price. Mining adds equipment selection, delivery, installation, electricity, cooling, pool configuration and maintenance. Hosting changes who performs some tasks; it does not eliminate the costs or contractual responsibilities.

Compare complete scenarios on the same basis

Use the same budget, currency, starting date and time horizon. For mining, reserve funds for recurring charges, repairs and interruptions. Date the network and price assumptions, account for pool fees and avoid treating equipment resale value as certain. Continued operation does not guarantee more bitcoin than a direct purchase.

Define the decision you need to make

No single approach is universally preferable. Review financial and tax suitability with advisers who understand your situation. Captain Mining’s role here is to discuss equipment and hosting requirements and prepare a written commercial scope. A hardware quote is not an investment recommendation or a promise of income.
