Antminer Z15 Pro: Why Zcash Miners Are Selling Out in 2026
Zcash was one of the top-performing coins of the summer, and every miner who can do basic math has noticed. ZEC climbed roughly 83% in August alone and is now trading in the $800+ USD range — up from about $350 in July. The direct consequence: the Bitmain Antminer Z15 Pro, a machine most people had written off as "old news" from 2023, is suddenly one of the most requested ASICs in our inbox. Here is what is actually going on, what a Z15 Pro earns today, and what to think about before you buy one.
Why is Zcash pumping right now?
This is not a random spike. Several concrete things happened between May and September 2026:
A spot Zcash ETF. Grayscale launched a spot ZEC ETF on NYSE Arca, giving traditional investors a regulated way to buy exposure. Zcash's market cap went from roughly $8 billion to over $14 billion in August as institutional money flowed in.
Coinbase brought ZEC to Base. Coinbase launched cbZEC, a wrapped version of Zcash on its Base Layer-2, so the coin can now be used as collateral across Base's DeFi ecosystem. New utility tends to support demand.
Real technical progress. The Zakura cryptographic library cut the time to build a private transaction from over 3 seconds to under 200 milliseconds. The Ironwood upgrade landed in July, and the community is voting on NU7. In parallel, the "privacy coin" narrative is getting louder as AI makes it easier to de-anonymize public blockchains — Grayscale itself published a report positioning Zcash as a hedge against that.
Put those together and you get a coin that broke a months-long resistance around $683 and moved into price discovery. Whether it holds is anyone's guess, but the drivers are more substantive than a typical meme rally.
Antminer Z15 Pro specs: the only serious Zcash miner
Zcash runs on the Equihash algorithm, and Bitmain's Z-series has dominated it for years. The Z15 Pro, first shipped in mid-2023, is still the flagship:
Hashrate: 840 kSol/s
Power draw: ~2,780 W (some batches are rated 2,560 W)
Efficiency: ~3.31 J/kSol
Cooling: air-cooled, ~75 dB
Coins: Zcash (ZEC), Horizen (ZEN), Komodo (KMD), Hush
Compared with the original Z15 (420 kSol/s at about 1,510 W), the Pro delivers double the hashrate for roughly 1.8x the power — better efficiency per Sol and a much better use of a hosting slot. There is no newer Equihash machine on the market, so if you want to mine Zcash competitively, this is the box. You can see the current price and availability on our Antminer Z15 Pro product page.
What does a Z15 Pro earn in September 2026?
At a ZEC price around $817 USD, live profitability trackers put the Z15 Pro at roughly $39 USD per day in gross revenue. A machine drawing 2,780 W burns about 67 kWh per day, so:
• At $0.10/kWh (our Quebec hosting rate), electricity is about $6.70/day, leaving roughly $32 USD/day net, or close to $950 USD/month.
• At a typical commercial or "blockchain" rate of $0.19–0.20/kWh, you lose about $13/day to power instead — the difference adds up to over $2,300 USD a year per machine.
On a machine priced in the mid-$3,000s USD range on the international market (more once shipping, duties and Canadian pricing are factored in), that works out to a payback window measured in months, not years — which is exactly why demand has exploded. To put it in perspective: in July, when ZEC was around $350, the same machine was making roughly $15–20 a day. The hardware didn't change; the coin price did.
Two honest caveats. First, these numbers move daily with the ZEC price and with network difficulty, and difficulty is rising as more Z15 Pros come online. Second, ZEC's next halving is projected for 2028, when the block reward drops from 1.5625 to 0.78125 ZEC. A machine you buy today has a realistic runway, but not an infinite one.
The risk nobody on Twitter mentions: proof-of-stake
This is where we would rather be the calm voice than the hype voice. The Zcash community has been discussing a transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake for years, and it is on the official roadmap. There is no firm date, and these transitions historically take much longer than announced (Ethereum's took about seven years from first mention to execution). But it is a real, structural risk for anyone buying Equihash hardware: the day Zcash moves to PoS, the Z15 Pro's main coin disappears, and the fallback coins (ZEN, KMD, Hush) have a fraction of the value.
The practical takeaway is not "don't buy." It is: underwrite your purchase on a fast payback. If the machine pays for itself in under a year at current prices, the PoS timeline is a manageable risk. If you need three years of mining to break even, it is not.
Should you buy a Z15 Pro right now?
Here is how we would frame it for the three types of people who write to us:
You already own Z15s or Z15 Pros. Congratulations — this is your moment. Make sure they are running at full uptime on cheap power. If they are sitting in a garage on a 15 A circuit, they are leaving money on the table.
You are a Bitcoin miner thinking about diversifying. A Z15 Pro is a reasonable hedge: a different algorithm, a different coin cycle, and currently a much better revenue-per-watt than most SHA-256 machines. Just size the position knowing that ZEC is more volatile than BTC.
You are new to mining and the headlines pulled you in. Be careful. Prices are highest exactly when everyone wants the machine, and the same crowd that bids the price up will be selling used units at a discount if ZEC corrects 40%. Buying the top is the classic beginner mistake in this industry. Buy because the math works at a conservative ZEC price, not because of last month's chart.
Running a Z15 Pro in Quebec
At 2,780 W and 75 dB, a Z15 Pro is not a living-room appliance. It needs a dedicated 240 V circuit, serious airflow, and a place where the noise doesn't matter. That is why most of the Z15 Pros we sell end up in our air-cooled hosting facility: $0.10 CAD/kWh hydro power, $250 installation, $50/month maintenance, 24/7 monitoring, and a live dashboard showing your hashrate and earnings. Your machine is online within about 48 hours, and you never touch a power cable.
Since 2022 we have deployed over 650 machines with +98% uptime, including plenty of Equihash units — and if you followed our earlier piece on the Zcash Orchard bug, you know we have been paying attention to this network for a while.
